A more thorough review of iPad Pete’s video lesson

I wanted to create a more thorough review of iPad Pete’s iPad video lesson. As I mentioned in my first review some people might ask, why do you need a video lesson for iPad? Isn’t it all intuitive? From my daily experience at the Assistive Technology Center, I’ve learned that the answer to the last question unfortunately is no. I’ve been giving courses in different devices over the years and one thing I’ve learned is that a good course which includes the use of hands on exercises really is worth the time. Most people today use only a tiny fraction of the capabilities in their iPad and  most people are learning to use it the hard way without any help. This is very time consuming and not efficient at all. On the other hand I can only give a few courses a year due to very tight time schedule at the Assistive Technology Center. I was thinking of making a video lesson course myself to save time, when I suddenly came over Pete’s iPad video lesson. I’m usually very skeptical, and I thought to my self that this might be a scam.  Well I decided to try it out, fortunately for me I found it to be a very good and useful video course. The course are divided in to logical modules and today there are more than 100 videos. This makes it much easier to find what you are looking for. One of the videos showing you how to adjust the password settings is actually free, so please click the picture below to take a look at the example video at the end of iPad Pete’s webpage.

Module 1 gives you an introduction to iPad and an overview of the main features. This in it self is what I would consider to be an introductory course covering what most people would get in a beginner level course.

Module 2 gives you a lot of neat tips and tricks that really are useful and time saving when using your iPad online.

Module 3 is going deeply into everything concerning e-mail on your iPad, actually parts of this module is useful even when using a Mac or PC too.

Module 4 is mainly about using your iPad for reading all kinds of written text, how to improve readability, e-books, newspapers, web-pages etc.

Module 5 takes you through everything you need to increase your productivity with your iPad and it also gives you an introduction to some funny apps.

Module 6 If you love to play music on your iPad this module is definitely for you! It shows you lots of examples on how to stream, download, play and gives you tips about settings too.

Module 7 Organizing photos is always useful being on an iPad or any other device where you are handling pictures. This module is going to need a small upgrade with iPad2, fortunately for you iPad Pete is upgrading his videos and adding new ones quite frequently at no extra cost. Actually I wasn’t aware of this when I bought the course, but it makes me really happy to know that for iPad 2 and probably for iPad 3 too the course will be updated giving people much more value than a static course bought on a DVD or a book.

Module 8 This module shows you everything you need in order to transfer your iPad into a movie playing machine, from the easiest steps to more advanced settings, useful apps and formats. Connect your iPad to other devices and experience the full power of sound and video!

Module 9 shows you in easy steps how to manage your contacts, this is essential to all iPad users.

Module 10 Organizing your schedule shows you how iPad can become the most essential and personal device you own. Sync with other devices like Mac, iphone and PC!

Module 11 Find Your Way with Maps are really cool, maps on iPad is just wonderful. If you want to use it while you are driving your car or on foot finding exactly the places you are looking for and all the information about the places where you are going. It really gives you so much more than an ordinary GPS device. Personally I think this is the best module so far.

Module 12 Writing with Your iPad this is hopefully not the main reason why you bought your iPad, the module shows you how you can turn iPad into a useful device for writing notes, e-mails, text of almost any kind. Use the onscreen keyboard, but actually if you are going to write a book or a long article you should consider buying a keyboard to your iPad or perhaps even better, use another device like a Mac or PC. The iPad is great for many purposes, however writing long texts is not one of them.

All in all I’ll give this course a 5 out of 6. For people without severe handicaps it’s closer to 6 than 5, but I miss some modules about ability settings, universal design and layout. This is important to me as I work at an Assistive Technology Center and have to think about the usability for people with handicaps. However I strongly recommend this course to anyone who want’s to learn more about iPad / iPad2 and how to get the most out of it.

A useful article about iPad Pete’s iPad video lesson

My aim was to create a review of iPad Pete’s iPad video lesson. Some people might ask, why do you need a video lesson for iPad? Isn’t it all intuitive? From my daily experience at the Assistive Technology Center, I’ve learned that the answer to the last question unfortunately is no. Most people actually spend an excessive amount of time with their iPad to reveal its full potential. People in general use only a tiny fraction of the iPad’s potential. So how do people learn efficiently? Humans learn best when they use multiple senses, (e.g. eyes, ears, tactile and kinetic) that’s why you should use either a real time course or a video course in combination with hands on exercises.

The iPad and iPad 2 are both great multipurpose tools in iPad Pete’s video lesson you really get to know lots of useful tips and tricks that are really helpful in your everyday use of your iPad. Real time courses are few and really expensive, that’s one of the reasons why I recommend people who ask me at the Assistive Technology Center to purchase iPad Pete’s video lesson. Another thing is that a video course is much more flexible, you can use it when you have the time. I tell people here in Norway that if they spend 10 – 15 minutes a day with this video course they will be experts in a very short time. I also tell them to use it as a flexible dictionary and look up features they haven’t used in a long time and don’t remember how to do any more. A very good thing about this course is that it is dynamic in the way that iPad Pete is adding and updating new videos all the time. I didn’t know this when I purchased the iPad video course. To me this is more like a one time subscription where you always will get updated videos covering new features for instance in iPad 2 or coming versions of iPad. Just imagine watching a lot of new iPad 2 video lessons. To me this is adding a lot of extra value to the course. Especially if you compare it to a static course on a DVD or in a book.

Motorola Xoom vs Apple iPad 2 – Wars of The Tablet

Motorola Xoom vs Apple iPad 2 – Wars of The Tablet

Article by Chad Bastian

The next generation of Apple’s tablet PC, iPad 2 are waited by the rest of the world.

Unveiled on March 2, the iPad 2 features shows a lot of over its older brethren. However, it remains to be seen if these improvements will be enough to keep Apple’s share of the tablet PC market intact. Back in 2010, the first iPad was a major success with a global sales around 14.8 million items. The original iPad was so successful with the estimated of 75% of the tablet PC market are owned by Apple.

The iPad’s commercial success, however, has attracted many competitors. With so many companies joining the tablet bandwagon and building their own iPad killer version, many are eager to see how the iPad 2 fares against the improving competition.

In this review we make a head-to-head comparison between iPad 2 and what many consider its strongest competitor to date, the Motorola Xoom.

1. Processor

The iPad 2 is fitted with Apple’s dual-core 1GHz A5 chip, a big improvement from the previous iPad. The A5 chip claimed to be 10 times better graphical performance than the old iPad. We don’t know for sure on the RAM size for the iPad 2, but 512MB is a huge possibility.

Motorola Xoom is equipped with a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 CPU. At 1GB of RAM, this chip along with the Android 3.0 OS and make the tablet to multi task effortlessly.

Advantage – Xoom

2. Display

The iPad 2 has the same 9.7-inch backlit-LED IPS display that can be found in iPad 1 which is wonderful because it still is the best in its class.

The Xoom has a standard 10.1-inch TFT display. Great for surfing the web and watching movies but does not offer the types of viewing angles we are accustomed to in the iPad.

Advantage -Apple iPad 2

3. Camera

One of the biggest drawbacks of the older iPad was the lack of a camera. Now iPad 2 has two cameras. The iPad 2′s dual cameras are a 0.7-megapixel main camera with 720P movie capture capability, and a secondary VGA camera that works fine if you want to use it for video calls.

In this category, Xoom has an upper hand. With an impressive 5-megapixel main camera and are equipped with dual-LED flash and autofocus and a secondary 2-megapixel camera for video conferencing, the Xoom is definitely the winner here.

Advantage – Motorola Xoom

4. Design and Build

When it comes to design and build quality you know Apple does not disappoint. iPad 2 looks and feel are simply amazing. The iPad 2 perhaps are 15 percent lighter and 33 percent thinner than the original iPad, however the tablet are still build with top of the line materials.

Because of it’s slimmer design, iPad 2 now are more comfortable to handle with the same solid feel.

The Motorola Xoom is just as well constructed. The chassis is solid. It does however feel bulkier and heavier than the slim-built iPad 2.

It is safe to say Apple tablet win this round.

Advantage – Apple iPad 2

5. Operating System

The iPad 2 is equipped with the new iOs 4.3 which features better browser and web application performance.

The Motorola Xoom comes with the Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” OS which boosts multi-tasking capabilities and has made it more user-friendly.

We feel that the Honeycomb OS gives the Xoom an advantage. The iOs 4.3 feels like its just a minor tune-up for Apple.

Advantage – Motorola Xoom

6. Connectivity

The Apple iPad 2 comes with Wi-Fi a,b,g & n, and Bluetooth 2.1 capabilities with A2DP and EDR. It als has HDMI-output. However, it does not have a card reader, USB Port and MicroSD slot.

The Motorola Xoom has the same capabilities as the iPad 2′s but none of its shortcomings. The Xoom has MicroSD support, Micro USB port, HDMI-out, Wi-Fi a,b,g & n (dual-band) and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR.

Advantage – Motorola Xoom

7. Price

Well the price of each tablet are interesting. The Apple iPad 2 has an introductory price of 9 for its base Wi-Fi unit.

The Motorola Xoom’s introductory price is 9 for its Wi-Fi only base unit. The iPad 2 price are not expected by the other competitors.

Advantage: Apple iPad 2

Verdict: Out of 7 categories, the Motorola Xoom bested the Apple iPad 2 in 4. Feature and function wise the Xoom is the better tablet. However, Apple shows a great pricing strategy, we would not be surprised that the iPad 2 will remain to be the best seller in tablet PC market (yet again).

The Best Free Apps for the Apple iPad 2, part one.

The Best Free Apps for the Apple iPad 2, part one.

Article by Brian Sherman

There are literally thousands of Free Apps available for your iPad 2 from the App store and many being added daily but the majority of them are worth exactly what you pay for them…nothing. I’ve spent many hours downloading these Apps hoping to find a little gem only to be disappointed but you just don’t know until you try. In among the rubbish however, I have found many which I use often and these are some of them that i would recommend you download. Remember, at the time of writing, these Apps are free but they could have changed by the time you read this. In no particular order, these are my favourites.

Kindle – Amazon’s Kindle App. There are over half a million books available at the Kindle Store and you can download many of these for free to read when you want to just chill. If the book is rubbish, simply delete it, you haven’t wasted any money. Of course, all the latest blockbusters are also there if you want to buy them, and i love the fact that you can download them from the App store without even leaving your chair and usually for cheaper than the actual paper edition. This is the kind of app that the ipad was made for.

Movies by Flixter. If you’re a movie buff like me, you’ll love this app. The app figures out where you are and tells you which films are showing at your local cinema. Or, you can pick a film and the app will tell you where and when that film is on. Pick a film and view the trailer, view photos or reviews from the film and add a rating for the film once you’ve seen it or add a review. Check out when films are coming to the big screen and what the dates are for DVD releases. The app is also on the iPhone but the extra screen size of the iPad improves the experience.

eBay for iPad – Once you have used this app on your iPad, you’ll probably not touch eBay in a web browser again. It’s efficient and fast, beautifully showing important details and images in the main results view. It enables quickfire sorting and drag based definition of price ranges. It has it’s limitations at the moment but eBay promises updates will only improve this experience.

BBC News – I do like to keep up to date with the latest news and sports headlines and this app is the one that I use to do this. Pick a news story and read it, or watch a video about that subject. Alternatively, watch live video from the BBC’s 24 hour news channel.

TV Guide for Ipad – Ideal for the couch potatoes among us. If you want to know what’s on the TV that night, or in the future, you’ll enjoy this app. Choose which channels you want to add to your list and simply scroll up and down the screen to show what are on your chosen channels at any given time. Click on any TV show and it will give you information about it

Facebook – It would appear that everyone uses Facebook these days and the iPad’s app allows you to do nearly everything that you can do using the PC. Take photos and share them with your friends, update your status and see what all your friends are up to, message your friends etc. The only problem with this is that you will use this app so much at work, you’ll never get any work done.

Epicurious – This app gives you tens of thousands of recipes at your fingertips making it an essential app if you like your cooking or just fancy doing something different. The app even shows you a shopping list that you will need for each recipe. The only downside i can see at the moment is that it shows all the measurements in “metric” and I’m still living in the olden days.

Wikipanion – This app is basically just Wikipedia for the iPad. The app lets you search for anything that you want, click on the links for more info about a subject, look at related info or bookmark entries to look at later. It’s a good way of finding out the answers to your queries without having to try and google it, then search through all those pages.

Shazam – Ever heard some song on the radio and wondered “what the heck is that?” or who sings that? This app is the one for you then, simply start the app and it listens to the song and hopefully will tell you what the song actually is, it will even give you the link if you wish to buy it from iTunes. This app is great for those music quizzes, just don’t tell anyone you are cheating.

BBC iPlayer – The perfect app if you have missed a BBC programme or want to see it again at a later date. There is something very relaxing about watching TV in bed but even better with your iPad with your WIFI connection. If you have a slower connection, you can always turn the high quality playback off and stream a lesser quality but still watchable version.

Apple iPad 2 Set to Rock the Tablet World Again

Apple iPad 2 Set to Rock the Tablet World Again

Article by Reg Spencer

While Apple did not invent touchscreen tablets they were certainly the first company to whip up enough of a frenzy to make them a viable product for consumers. Prior to the launch of the original iPad many people had wondered what exactly was the point to tablets and many speculated that the product would become a spectacular failure. But, in true Apple fashion, the iPad went on to become a must have item with sales in the millions and spawned a whole new market in the world of electronics. While there have been few tablets that have come close to the popularity of the iPad, the iPad 2 is not as much of a game changing device as the original. This is because the major improvements that have been made to the iPad 2 are already being featured on many of Apple’s biggest tablet rivals, but there is no doubt that the iPad 2 will achieve the same level of popularity as the original.

One of these developments is the introduction of dual core processors, with the iPad 2 now featuring a dual core 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor providing twice the processing power of the original. The iPhone 4 won a lot of respect for its Retina Display screen and it is sad to see that Apple have not yet developed a way to bring this technology to the larger iPad display. Regardless of this, the iPad 2 comes with an excellent 9.7″ LED backlit IPS screen with a superb 16 million colour depth. The screen runs on capacitive technology and comes with all the multitouch glory that that entails. As well as featuring an accelerometer, as was found on the original iPad, the iPad 2 now comes with a 3-axis gyro sensor that was made popular on the latest iPhone. This provides full 3 dimensional controls that can be put to good use with many of the apps and games available from Apple’s App Store.

Like the original, there are two versions of the iPad 2 available. One comes with just Wi-Fi support while the other comes with Wi-Fi and 3G connections. On top of this there are variations in the amount of storage capacity on offer, with either 16, 32 or 64GB available. Like most Apple devices there is no expandable microSD card slot, so what you see is what you get.

The iPad 2 comes with a 0.7 megapixel camera, which may seem like a bit of a disappointment considering some of the cameras available on competing devices. However, this does come with 720p video capturing and a secondary front facing VGA camera is available for video calling through FaceTime. The iPad 2 also comes with a TV-out port allowing you to enjoy videos through your home TV.

There is no doubt that the iPad 2 is not as ground breaking as the original Apple tablet, and looks set to face a lot more competition from the second wave of Android devices. Despite this, it features some significant improvements over the original including dual core processors, the inclusion of cameras and the 3 dimensional gyro sensor. As the original iPad still remains a best seller in the world of tablets it is likely that the iPad 2 will be a phenomenal hit despite being in a tougher position than its predecessor.

For the Non 3G version, it weighs 680g, and 730g for the 3G version. It has a 1 GB, A4 Apple processor and it comes in three ranges of capacity, i.e, 16, 32, and 64 GB. It has a 2.1+EDR and a 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi for better internet connectivity. The iPad 2 has a digital compass. There’s also a GPS on-board in the 3G version and both versions have an ambient light censor and accelerometer. It also has a built-in microphone and a built-in speaker. The iPad 2 resembles a large iPhone and more likely to an iPod Touch. Its not super heavy but it does has a healthy solidness to it. SOFTWARE:

The iPad 2 screen protector is running a modified version of the iPhone that is OS 3.2. It has some new user interface additions. It is upgradable up to OS 4.0. The software used in the iPad 2 has only a few changes from the iPhone software. The common change is the modification of the apps for this size screen.

APPLICATIONS:

Every installed application has been upgraded and recoded for the larger screen. Some of the notable iPad 2 apps include Safari for a better internet experience, Mail, Calendar, Youtube, iPod, iTunes, App store, Maps, Notes, Books, Spotlight search etc. Most of the applications used in the iPad 2 are the modified and upgraded forms of the apps used in the iPhone.

DRAWBACKS:

Like any other gadget, it has some drawbacks as well. The modern generation computer without a camera is incomplete. Yes, the iPad 2 doesn’t has any built-in camera. This device doesn’t supports Flash also, which is also a big drawback. Multi-tasking is not accessible. Browsing without listening to the music, sounds pathetic. Some other failures of this device include the unavailability of USB Ports and storage capacity limitations. That’s a nightmare.

Although the iPad 2 cover has some failures and drawbacks, it is still a computing revolution. The technology will continue to advance and we will definitely see yet another remarkable device, possibly in the near future.

Amadeus Consulting Discusses What’s New in App Development: iPad 2 and iOS 4.3

Article by Todd McMurtrey

What’s New in App Development: iPad 2 and iOS 4.3

As most of you know, last week Apple® announced the release of iPad™ 2, available for purchase on March 11. As a mobile application developer we thought it might be good to quickly highlight the new features and see how it stacks up to the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy.

What is New?

The obvious first response from a consumer might be is it comes in white or black! Continuing on its physical features, consumers will note that it is physically lighter and thinner than the current iPad. It is 8.8 mm thick, thinner than the current iPhone™ 4. These physical features aren’t necessarily a defining upgrade but they do improve the iPad’s portability and everyday use, which in turn could increase consumers and business interest in using iPad’s and creating iPad Apps.

The most notable change is by far that FaceTime is now available with a front facing VGA camera on the new iPad 2. This is great news for consumers who pretty much demanded it as a new feature in the next generation iPad. The graphics technology is also said to be a great improvement over the current iPad, with 9x the current iPad graphics power using Power VR SGX graphics technology. Another really cool feature of the iPad 2 is its HDMI out connector. This allows users to hook their iPad up to their TV and play movies, video or even mirror your iPad 2 screen on your TV.

Being able to mirror your iPad on your TV has one obvious implication: Games. Although the iPad’s new A5 dual-core chip still isn’t powerful for high end gaming graphics, it is still pretty impressive, and it could turn the iPad into a very interesting control surface with a lot of possibilities. But besides gaming, even being able to “rent” movies on the iPad 2 and then stream them to your TV is still pretty impressive, though some phones and other devices can do that too.

And, being an Apple, you will of course need to purchase the HDMI to 30-pin adapter dongle separately.

Software and Apps

Also of note is that the iPad 2 will be running latest version of iOS which is iOS 4.3. This includes a few updates to improve performance and to take advantage of some of the iPad 2′s hardware features such as a front and back camera, as well as some user interface improvements.

From an app development perspective, not much has changed. There is a new beta SDK available for iOS 4.3 for developers, but they will find that very little has changed from their end. Apps that function on the first generation iPad will also function on the iPad 2. The biggest benefit though is that apps can now take advantage of the new hardware features for the iPad 2 and be optimized for the device.

This means that any app for the iPhone 4 using the cameras could also work fairly seamlessly on the iPad 2, although some optimization may need to occur to take advantage of the larger display. However, improved performance, connectivity, and an even more portable design also provide incentive for developers to create apps specifically for the tablet experience.

Looking Forward

Even though the Android now has the largest share of the smartphone market, Apple is still leading the way in terms of innovation. As the iPad becomes a mainstream device, tablet software will become increasingly important. This will eventually segment into its own category as developers work to create a meaningful software experience on the tablet, rather than just porting over apps from smartphones.

Also, the ability to mirror the screen onto a TV, as well as the ability to do real-time graphics processing provides a lot of interesting possibilities for app developers.

Steve Loper, one of the senior quality engineers at Amadeus Consulting recently wrote an article outlining some of the possibilities and limitations of tablet software development. In the article he discusses the limitations of tablets as “creation devices” and asks “what will it take to make the tablet into a creation device without changing it into a laptop?”

Steve’s answer was that it is more about the software (the app) than about the hardware supporting it. As he said, good software design will enable a new input paradigm and enable people to create – be it images, writings, or other creations– as well as they can elsewhere. With the iPad 2, it seems that everything is in place to allow people to easily consume information and entertainment, and now the framework is in place for innovative designers to come up with good creation applications.
